description: Most of the early branch members were part of the 1838 Kirtland Camp, who decided to stop in Springfield for the winter, but did not leave. Joel H. Johnson of the presidency of the Seventy led them until he moved to Carthage in 1839. When it was organized as a stake in 1840, Edwin P. Merriam was called as president, and Abraham Palmer as bishop. No high council was ever called. After the call to disorganize the outlying stakes in May 1841, Merriam moved to Nauvoo, leaving the stake/branch in a somewhat disorganized state. After some internal strife, the members reorganized the branch in 1842 under the presidency of James Adams. The branch may have been organized again in 1844.
