description:In the early 1840s, this was the largest branch east of Nauvoo. In April 1841 Hyrum Smith continued his stake-organizing mission by "more fully organizing" the Philadelphia Branch, calling both a full presidency (Pres. Benjamin Winchester) and a bishopric (Bishop Jacob Syfrett). It is not clear how long this organization lasted; Winchester moved to Nauvoo in October 1842 and Syfritt was excommunicated in 1843. By 1844 it is again a normally organized, but very large, branch.
