description: Throughout its six year existence, St. Thomas appears to have had a primary role over the other Muddy Settlements. The bishop of the St. Thomas Ward usually had a presiding role over the entire region, except for a few months in 1868-1869 when Joseph W. Young presided, apparently in absentia. At first, it appears that the ward itself included the entire region, but by 1867, the roles of St. Thomas bishop and Muddy River presiding bishop were seen as separate.
