description: Prophet James C. Brewster called for a settlement of Brewsterites in the land of "Bashan," along the Colorado River in the southwest. Royce Oatman of Fulton Iowa and his family, Mary his wife, Lucy 16, Charity Ann 5, Roland 1, Olive Ann 12, Lorenzo Dow 15, Mary Ann Oatman 10, Royce Jr.11. At Maricopa Wells, AZ. They left the others of the wagon train and headed towards the Gila River by themselves. As they topped the ridge near the river they were attacked by Western Yavapai Indians. Lorenzo, Mary, and Lucy survived and Lorenzo and Mary united and went to El Monte California to stay with the Ira W. Thompson family.?
