description:The early settlement was led by Meltiar Hatch from the time that it was settled in 1864. Hatch was able to keep the peace during the Black Hawk War, so it was not abandoned and actually grew, with a small town plat surveyed, a fully organized ward, and spawned a neighboring dependent branch in Spring Valley. The ward diminished after the stateline survey of 1870 determined that they were in Nevada, and several residents left, including Bishop Hatch. The ward tried to continue operating with Acting Bishop John Bennion, but it appears that by 1873 or 1874, it was essentially dependent on Panaca, with one bishop leading both wards. By 1877, it was officially a dependent branch of the Panaca Ward.
