notes: Limited sources provide little clue as to location. They were granted permission to organize a stake at October 1840 General Conference, but no record of a stake by this name can be found. There is a chance that this was a preliminary name for what was soon organized as the Freedom Branch/Stake: Henry W. Miller presents the petition for Mount Ephraim Stake at conference on October 3, 1840 (History of the Church 4:204), then on October 27, he is made president of the Freedom Stake (History of the Church 4:233). However, Freedom Stake may have existed as early as February 20 1840. It is also possible that Miller was submitting the request on behalf of another settlement, such as Mt. Hope. The conference report does not state that he was from Mt. Ephraim himself.
