description: Strangite refugees founded the village around 1856 and named it after the prophet in the Book of Mormon. Located in northern Jackson County, the township of Alma is home to two of the larger villages in the county, Alma Center and Merrillan. Created in 1856 when Albion was cut into smaller pieces. LDS Missionaries came back to the area in the 1860s and baptized a few of the Prindle and Wing families, who emigrated to Utah.?
