description: In 1848 James Strang began investigating the island for removal of the members from Voree. Their intent was to found a kingdom in the islands of Lake Michigan. Strang claimed to be the legitimate head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he founded a colony with 2,500 followers on Beaver Island, at the head of Lake Michigan. (Burgess, Charles O.). On July 5th bands of armed gunmen, mostly from Mackinac Island, herded virtually all the Mormons on Beaver Island onto waiting steamers (490 in one vessel and 300 in another vessel) bound for Chicago. In the span of a day or so, approximately 2,600 Mormon men, women and children were uprooted from the Beaver Island area (Green Bay and the Mormons of Beaver Island)?
