description: In the spring of 1864 a couple of young missionaries Elders H. H. Morgan and Hyrum Dalk (Falk), representing the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints came to El Monte. Joseph Clapp and his mother were the first two to renew our covenants in Southern Calif. At the same time and place Bro. John Penfold and two of his sons, and several others were baptized, and a branch organized, Bro. John Penfold president. This was the Elmont Branch, the first branch organized in Southern California.”<br/> The branch was organized with 6 members, 3 elders, and John Penfold president . ?

I placed the marker on Durfee Road near where the San Jose creek empties into the San Gabriel River. Here was located the Workman mill run by the Chapmans, members who were also baptized by the missionaries.
