description:Peter Maughan was appointed the bishop over Cache Valley in June 1859, then was called as president of the newly organized Cache Valley Stake that November. In April 1860, Apostle Ezra T. Benson was called to preside over the valley, with Maughan returning to the presiding bishopric. When Elder Benson died in September 1869, Maughan became the de facto president and bishop, until he too died in April 1871, after which Logan Bishop William Preston acted in the presiding role. Apostle Brigham Young Jr. was placed in charge in August 1972. There is little evidence of a working high council during these years, before the stake is officially reorganized May 20, 1877 with President Moses Thatcher.
