description: In the October 1839 general conference, Oliver Granger was called to preside in Kirtland; he went there, but it is not clear that he organized a stake per se. In the October 1840 conference, Almon Babbitt was called to replace him, with a specific assignment to organize a stake there. He appears to have arrived around January, and must have organized something, because he was confirmed as stake president at the May 1841 conference. Within a year, Babbitt was disfellowshipped, and his counselors left in charge until a conference in 1842 when they decided to discontinue the stake. The stake had a presidency, a bishopric (Bishop Thomas Burdick), and priesthood quorums, but no high council. It may or may not have included surrounding branches.
